Eagle Scouts must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges and serve in leadership positions to earn the distinction. Candidates also need to complete a community service project to help local organizations. Only about 5 percent of Scouts go on to earn the honor, according to the Boy Scouts of America.
A.J. Accomando, Thomas Anania, James Cheung, Peter Jacobs, Thomas Romano and Michael Tommins all reached the rank. Here are just a few of the six high school seniors’ accomplishments:
Accomando’s project helped the troop’s home church. At First Church he helped organize the landscaping and clean-up project on the grounds, planting a memorial tree and restoring a memorial garden. The Fairfield Ludlowe senior will study Economics at the University of Richmond next fall.
Anania worked with the Aspetuck Land Trust for his service project. He helped clear and restore a trail surrounding Sasco Pond. Anania is also an honor student at Fairfield Warde and a one-time All-America wrestler.
Cheung went to Bridgeport’s St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church for his project. There he designed and built an engraved-brick patio outside the church. Cheung is also a member of the Math, Science, Spanish and National Honor Societies and volunteers at St. Vincent’s Medical Center.
Jacobs’ project benefited the Jewish Home for the Elderly. There he designed and built five wooden planter boxes for the residents to plant gardens. A Fairfield Ludlowe senior, Jacobs also earned the Good Citizen Award from local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Romano used his project to help the Connecticut Audubon Society. He built a new bench and repaved a walkway at the front entrance to the organization’s Center at Fairfield. He is also an editor of Fairfield Ludlowe’s student newspaper, and has received the school’s Harvard Book Award and Spanish Award.
Tommins also worked at the CAS Center at Fairfield for his project. His worked cleared a path and installed a 300-yard boardwalk at the center’s Trillium Trail. Tommins also founded History and English Honor Societies at Fairfield Ludlowe and is a certified lifeguard at the Fairifeld YMCA and the town’s beaches.
