The main roads in town continue to be safe for most local travel, but the side roads are a mess as a fresh powder begins to cover sheets of ice hidden below the snow.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. with snow continuing until about 4 p.m., with temperatures in the mid-20s. Total daytime accumulations could be up to 5 inches.

Although the Fairfield Public Schools as well as the town's parochial and private schools have been closed for the day due to the bad weather, Sacred Heart University on Park Avenue is open and no classes have been delayed, according to the university's Department of Public Safety.

Fairfield University on North Benson Avenue has canceled all classes before 4:30 p.m., but all university offices remain closed for the day, according to their website.
