Sports, Puzzles Highlight Fairfield's Weekend

FAIRFIELD, Conn. ? Hey, Fairfield, looking for fun activities to do with the kids this weekend? Here’s a collection of some of the many events happening in and around Fairfield over the next three days:

Friday, Jan. 27

? 4 p.m.: If your kids are fans of the book and movie series “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” drop them off at Fairfield Woods Branch Library for this week’s “Cabin Fever at Woods” program. The library will have an hour of activities inspired by the series, including making mini-pretzel log cabins, a snow clothes relay race, mad libs and more. ? 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.: Fairfield University’s basketballs team will hold a Coaches vs. Cancer event this weekend at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, starting with a doubleheader on Friday evening. The women’s team will take on Manhattan College at 4 p.m. The men’s team will then take on Iona at 7 p.m. The teams will display banners and hold programs to raise money for the American Cancer Society through the event. Tickets range from $5 to $25 for each game.

Saturday, Jan. 28

? 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.: Pro Impact Soccer Academy will host a kids soccer clinic at the Sportsplex on Mill Plain Road. The camp’s instructors will teach kids everything from the basics to more advanced training. The morning-long session costs $75 per child. Register at the PISA website in advance.

? 1 p.m.: Have trouble cracking that classic puzzle the Rubik’s cube? Get a crash course with your kids at Hobbytown USA on the Post Road. Scott Trueblood, a local expert in the game, will hold a four-week course on the logic behind the puzzle. The first session is Saturday, Jan. 28. The class is free, but space is limited. Reserve a spot by calling 203-256-0773.

? 7 p.m.: Barrage, a Canadian educational band, will perform a special concert at Fairfield Warde High School. The musicians use music and dance to try to persuade young students to join music education programs. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors and $15 for adults, and are available through the Fairfield Public Schools website.

Sunday, Jan. 29

1 p.m.:  The Westport Playhouse will present “The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales.” The program is produced by the Griffin Theatre Company and based on Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith's book. Kids will recognize familiar fairy tale characters, including Cinderella, Rumpelstiltskin and Goldilocks in the playlets. Recommended for ages 4-10. Tickets are $18 and available through the playhouse website.
