Deanna Spartachino stands alone in what looks like an empty warehouse. All she can talk about, however, is what will be there soon: grass-like fields, locker rooms and dozens of children playing soccer, football or lacrosse you name it.
"If you'd seen what it came from, you'd see how far we've come," Deanna says. "It looked like a construction site."
She works with Sportsplex , the 120,000 square-foot gathering of sports facilities along Mill Plain Road near the train station. The space she's standing in will be the Field House, an indoor multipurpose field that will serve as the complex's centerpiece. When the space opens in early December, Deanna trusts that it will be a boon to Fairfield's families.
"This is very much needed in Fairfield," she says. "[There's] almost no field space options in Fairfield. Most families have to head out to Norwalk or Trumbull."
Sportsplex will use the field to run indoor sports leagues and camps year-round. And families are already booking the space for birthday parties, where they can use the field for three different sports at once. And in the summer, Sportsplex will use the field house as its main center for its camps.
Kids at the camps will also be able to hop among all of the complex's facilities. A taekwondo center , a gymnastics academy , rock-climbing walls , an ice rink , a yoga center and a fitness center have already set up shop at Sportsplex, with more centers on the way. And Deanna expects a few restaurants to move in as well.
"I see a lot of families, bringing their daughters over to gymnastics, bringing their sons over to hockey, and then going over and taking a hot yoga class," Deanna says. "There's a lot of people who have found themselves able to take advantage of a lot of venues while they're here."
