Fairfield Physician Joins Stamford-Based AmeriCares

STAMFORD, Conn. – Dr. Julie Varughese of Fairfield has joined Stamford-based AmeriCares as its new medical officer and senior technical adviser, access to medicines and supplies.

“AmeriCares is at the forefront of global health and emergency response work in a world that continues to be more and more interconnected,” Varughese said. “I am excited to join this dedicated team and further my longstanding commitment to health care delivery here at home and abroad.”

Varughese, who previously worked at Norwalk Hospital, is responsible for increasing access to quality medicine for low-income patients in more than 90 countries. She will shape programs to enhance patient care, provide medical oversight and review offers of donated products from over 200 pharmaceutical and medical supply companies.

She will help to ensure the contributed items are used safely and effectively by 3,500 health care partners around the globe.

Varughese is board certified in infectious disease, internal medicine and pediatrics. She was previously a clinical infectious disease attending physician at Norwalk Medical Group and Norwalk Hospital and also worked in Norwalk Community Health Center’s HIV clinic.

She is experienced in providing medical care in challenging settings, and has worked in India, South Africa, Guatemala and Ecuador.

Varughese earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., and a medical degree from Rush University in Chicago, where she completed her residency training. She also completed an infectious disease fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, N.Y.

She lives in Fairfield with her husband, Mat, and two children.
