Thousands Wait In Cold To See Obama Campaign For Malloy

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Strong winds and frigid temperatures didn't stop more than 1,900 Connecticut voters from packing Bridgeport Central High School's gymnasium to near capacity on Sunday to hear President Barack Obama speak in support of Gov. Dannel Malloy on the campaign trail.

“I wanted to see what the goals are for the next four years,” Kalim Malik, an Obama and Malloy supporter, said outside of the gymnasium.

Malik was one of many supporters who came with their children, sign in hand, to “teach them about the American Dream”, as Malik put it.

The Mystic resident arrived in Bridgeport at about 1 p.m. to wait in line for entrance into the gymnasium. He brought his son, Tahah, and his daughter, Aytal, to the Malloy rally.

And supporters did more than just show up and fill seats, they filled the space with cheers and excitement as well.

At times throughout both Malloy and Obama’s speeches, chants of “four more years,” and the stomping of bleachers were so loud it became difficult to hear the officials at all. One more than one occasion, cheers stopped the president mid-sentence, forcing him to settle the crowd and restart.

That kind of energy is what brought Monica Heredia and her young son, Matthew, to the rally.

“We came because of all the excitement of seeing Barack,” Heredia said.

Her teeth chattered as she told the Daily Voice after the rally that her and her son had arrived at about 2 p.m. and waited over an hour to hear Obama speak.

“It was an amazing experience,” she said.
