Trinity Episcopal Church In Southport Plans Holy Week Events

SOUTHPORT, Conn. – The procession from the Perry Green in historic Southport Harbor on Palm Sunday has been Trinity Church’s traditional start to Holy Week for many years, and this year is no different.

"Our services for Holy Week convey a nonviolent message of universal love. From Palm Sunday, March 29, to Easter morning, April 5, we tell the story of the last week of the life of Jesus,” said the church’s newly elected Rector Peggy Hodgkins. 

Parishioners begin these high holy days with on Palm Sunday, March 29, with a joyous parade at 9:30 a.m. from Perry Green up Center Street to the church. Children are invited to decorate bicycles, tricycles, and scooters, and ride in the parade accompanied by the gifted choristers of Trinity waving palms. 

Once the parade reaches the church, the joy shifts to solemnity, as the Passion Narrative tells the story of the betrayal of Jesus in a garden and his death on a cross. This year, the middle school youth group will lead the parish in the reading of the Passion Narrative at the 10 a.m. service. 

Trinity Church invites the wider community to walk the Way of the Cross and celebrate Easter at these services during Holy Week:

  • March 29: Palm Sunday, 8 and 10 a.m. services, with the Passion Narrative at 10 a.m. led by youth. 
  • Palm procession starts at 9:30 a.m. at Perry Green
  • April 1: Holy Wednesday, 11 a.m.: Holy Eucharist
  • April 2: Maundy Thursday, 11 a.m.: Holy Eucharist Commemorating the Last Supper; 
  • April 2: Maundy Thursday, 6 p.m.: Agape Meal for the community (Middle Eastern fare)
  • April 2: Maundy Thursday, 7:30 p.m.: Maundy Thursday Service commemorating the Last Supper, with foot washing
  • April 2: Maundy Thursday, 8:30 p.m.: The Watch/ A prayer vigil in the chapel
  • April 3: Good Friday, noon: The Way of the Cross;
  • April 3: Good Friday Liturgy at 1 p.m.
  • April 4: Easter Eve 8 p.m.,  The Great Vigil of Easter
  • April 5: Easter Sunday: 9 and 11 a.m., Festive Choral Eucharist

Easter Egg Hunt for young children follows the 9 a.m. service in the churchyard.

Trinity Episcopal Church has been serving the community in Southport since 1725. 

Sunday services are open to everyone who wishes to join at both 8 and 10 a.m. with Sunday School classes held during the 10 a.m. service.
