3 Masked Gunmen Hold Up Bank

Fairfield police are hunting three masked bandits brandishing handguns who staged a daring raid on a bank Friday morning.

The gang stormed the Fairfield County Bank branch on Bronson Road around 10:30 a.m.

"They basically took over the bank," Chief Gary MacNamera said.

The robbers restrained the three employees and began taking cash. They also tied up a delivery person who entered the bank during the robbery.

The suspects then fled in a silver Honda Accord, heading south toward Interstate 95. After 10 minutes of struggling, one of the employees got free and called police.

"The suspects made their intentions very clear," MacNamera said. "They made sure everyone inside knew this was a bank robbery."

Police later found a vehicle, still running, that matched the description but had been abandoned in the parking lot of the rest stop near Exit 22 on I-95. A records check revealed the car was reported stolen in Bridgeport. Police were unsure whether the suspects switched to another vehicle or took off on foot, but they believe the car they found was the one used in the robbery.

The suspects did not fire their weapons and none of the witnesses were physically hurt. But MacNamera said they might suffer psychologically from the ordeal. "Any time you're secured and unable to move freely, it's scary," he said.

Witnesses could not provide a clear description of the robbers but believe they were black males. Anyone who may have seen the vehicle driving in the area of Bronson Road or I-95, or who could provide any other information, should call the Fairfield Police at (203) 254-4800.
