FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The bodies of two missing men — who had been fishing at Penfield Reef in Fairfield when they were swept out into Long Island Sound — were recovered Saturday afternoon, according to media reports.

A group of four men from Yonkers, N.Y., had been fishing together — with three were in the water and one on the beach, Police Chief Gary MacNamara told the Connecticut Post.

At 7:45 a.m. Saturday, the Coast Guard was notified that three people had been swept out into the Sound.

Rescue crews were launched and searched a 22-square-mile area surrounding Penfield Reef, the Coast Guard said.

One man was rescued by the Fairfield Fire Department shortly after 8 a.m., the Connecticut Post said. The man was unconscious, but he was revived, the Post said.

The Coast Guard search was suspended at 2 p.m. and switched to recovery mode.

Their bodies were recovered at about 4 p.m. Saturday during low tide by the Fairfield Police Marine Unit, according to NBC Connecticut.

The two men were identified as Jose Cruz, 40, and Victor Paulino, 32, both of Bruce Avenue in Yonkers, N.Y., according to the Connecticut Post.

Assisting in the search were a boatcrew from the Coast Guard Station New Haven; a HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod; the Fairfield Police Department Marine Unit; the Bridgeport Fire Department Marine Unit; Stratford Firefighters; the Stratford PD/FD Dive Team; and the Norwalk Police Marine Unit.
