The victim was identified as Mauro Godinez Pineda, 40, a Norwalk resident originally from Guatemala, The Hour said Tuesday morning.
Pineda was one of four men who left Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk in a canoe at about 12:20 p.m. Monday for an island to go fishing, police said. They were all thrown into the water after the canoe was hit by waves, police said.
Three men were pulled from the water by the Norwalk Fire Department boat, Lt. Paul Resnick said. Two men in the canoe were wearing life jackets, and two were not, police said.
First responders continued to search for the missing man, who was not wearing a life jacket and could not swim, police said. By about 3:30 p.m. Monday, the mission changed from search-and-rescue to search-and-recovery because first responders believed the victim could not have survived in the water, police said.
"We're not anticipating finding a living, viable victim," Lt. Paul Resnick said at a news conference at about 5 p.m. Monday.
