The Census Bureau released estimates of populations for Connecticut municipalities as of 2012, based on births, deaths and migration figures. Fairfield’s estimated population is now 60,053, according to the figures.
The new estimate represents an increase of 953 people, or 1.6 percent since the last official Census in 2010. The rate makes is among the faster-growing municipalities in Connecticut.
“Whether you are a community activist or active shopper, sports enthusiast or enthusiastic volunteer, senior citizen or toddler, Fairfield has something for everyone,” First Selectman Michael Tetreau says in his letter to residents.
Even with the increase, Fairfield is still the sixth-largest municipality in Fairfield County. Bridgeport, Stamford, Danbury, Norwalk and Greenwich all saw increases in their populations over the two-year span to stay ahead of Fairfield.
Fairfield’s population has kept pace with the rest of Fairfield County, which saw a similar gain overall in the last two years. The region has added more than 15,000 people since the 2010 census, according to the Census Bureau. Its 1.63 percent overall increase was the fastest growth in Connecticut over the two-year span.
“We are on a strong course,” said Lisa Mercurio of the Business Council of Fairfield County, referring to the whole county. “You don’t want to see people moving from the region.”
Mercurio, who works as the director of Fairfield County Information Exchange for the business council and tracks population information, added that the county’s population increase is in line with where it has been, and where a UConn database projects the population to be by 2025.
According to the database, the population will increase anywhere from about 1 percent to 8 percent depending on the fertility level.
