FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Connecticut Light & Power, which dealt with record power outages after last year's Halloween blizzard, says it is preparing for potential impacts of Hurricane Sandy

The storm, now a hurricane, could hit the East Coast with heavy rain and damaging winds and cause coastal flooding and beach erosion.

"We’re closely monitoring weather forecasts and preparing for high winds and heavy rain that can devastate the electric system and cause power outages,” Bill Quinlan, CL&P senior vice president of emergency preparedness, said in a news release Thursday. "The past year has been all about improving storm response, and we stand ready to respond as quickly and safely as possible. While we hope for the best, we all need to prepare for the worst.”

CL&P has a "Shopping for a Storm Kit" video on YouTube. People who are dependent on electricity for critical medical needs should make backup plans now.
