Petra Peniastek of Bridgeport has created a GoFundMe campaign called, "Helping our dear friend, Regi!” to help cover medical expenses for the man, who was shot in the abdomen.

"Our friend Regi Woodard was working at the bar 'Bar' in Stratford when an armed robbery occurred. As we all heard on the news — an unidentified man demanded money, which Regi handed over, but the man still shot him in his abdomen," the webpage says.

The shooting occurred at the bar, which is located on Main Street in Stratford Center, shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday, police Capt. Frank Eannotti said in a statement. After Woodward handed over the cash, he was shot once in the abdomen, police said.

Police said Woodard was in stable condition at Bridgeport Hospital on Wednesday after undergoing surgery.

"We are hopeful that he will get through this," the GoFundMe campaign says. "We wanna get together and help our dear friend in his time of need! Medical bills will be extensive and we have to help his family deal with them. He’s a well-respected man and an amazing friend."
