FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Connecticut politicians are hailing the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to strike down by 5-3 a restrictive Texas abortion law.

"I think the Supreme Court got it right,” Stamford Mayor David Martin said Monday. He said it is a constitutionally protected right and knocked Texas' attempt to place restrictions on abortion access.

In striking down the law, the Supreme Court sided with the arguments raised by Texas clinics that had argued the regulations were a thinly veiled attempt to make it harder for women to get an abortion.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn, spoke in favor of the decision.

"This decision is a resounding, historic triumph for women across America and their families," he said in a statement. "It is the right result - morally and legally - ensuring that health care is accessible for countless women, no matter where they live."

Among the politicians backing the decision was U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty, D-5th District, who looked back to when she was younger and the issues women faced.

“As a young woman, I witnessed first-hand the very real and profound impact that reproductive choice has on women’s lives," she said in a statement. "I grew up in a town where many young women didn’t have access to basic reproductive health services and volunteered at Planned Parenthood during college. Today is a great day for women’s health, but we still have a great deal of work ahead of us to make sure that safe reproductive health care is affordable and accessible for every woman in the United States."

Gov. Dannel Malloy agreed. “This decision represents a resounding defense of women’s rights against those who seek to roll back the clock," he said. "This is a majority opinion rooted in common sense – and it was the right one. As the world moves forward, many still continue to try to take us backward. We must continue to stand up for progress and for women’s rights. That’s why I applaud the Supreme Court’s decision today.”

Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman also praised the decision. “This is an important decision that affirms a woman’s right to safe, legal, accessible healthcare. These restrictions were nothing more than an underhanded attempt to re-litigate women’s healthcare and weaken the laws that protect a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body and future.

"I applaud the Supreme Court for seizing this opportunity to protect the availability and accessibility of healthcare for women,” she said.
