FAIRFIELD, Conn. A driver died in a single-car crash on the Merritt Parkway in Fairfield on Monday morning. Officials had not released any information to identify the driver, and police were still investigating possible causes for the crash.
The car crashed into a tree off the side of the parkway between exits 46 and 44 southbound at about 11:26 a.m. Monday. Fairfield Fire Department and Connecticut State Police crews pulled the driver from the heavily damaged car. But the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No other cars or people were involved in the accident.
Lt. Paul Vance of the state police said investigators were still reconstructing the accident to determine the cause. The identity of the driver will not be released until after the next of kin is notified.
The right lane of the parkway was closed while officials worked at the scene, but traffic was moving through the left lane. Vance said he expected both lanes to be cleared by about 2:15 p.m. Monday.
