Elizabeth Saulnier, 80, Of Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Elizabeth Casey Saulnier of Fairfield died July 14 at St. Vincent's Medical Center surrounded by her family after a prolonged battle with breast cancer. She was 80.

Born Jan. 6, 1932, in Medford, Mass., she graduated from Emmanuel College in Boston, Mass. in 1952. She worked at the Diocese of Bridgeport for many years. Saulnier received the Medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, the title of Dame Elizabeth from Pope John Paul II and the Medal of Honor for Service from the Diocese of Bridgeport. 

Saulnier was a member of Church of the Assumption in Fairfield. She also participated in the Women's Cursillo of Fairfield County, Emmaus Program of Spirituality for Youth, Thomas Merton Soup Kitchen and Cardinal Cushing Spanish Speaking Center in South Boston. Over the years, Saulnier and her husband, George, also welcomed foster children into their home. 

Saulnier was predeceased by her husband, Deacon George Irwin Saulnier; a daughter, Martha A. Ciccarelli; a granddaughter, Martha Lyn DiBenedetto; and a brother, Richard Casey. 

She is survived by two brothers, Robert Casey, of Centerville, Mass. and Ralph Casey, of Virginia; five daughters. Maryelise (Peter) DiBenedetto, of North Andover, Mass., Nannette (Richard) Persico, of Stratford, Katherine Saulnier, of Vernon Hills, Ill., Elizabeth (John) Hellthaler, of Trumbull and Joann (Brian) Thompson, of Dummerston, Vt.; two sons: George I. (Nano) Saulnier Jr., of Fairfield and Richard (Halena) Saulnier, of Milford, Conn.; 21 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. 

The wake will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Fairfield. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with burial following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Trumbull. Spear-Miller Funeral Home in Fairfield is in charge of arrangements. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Daily Television Mass, Office of Radio and Television, 15 Peach Orchard Road, Prospect, CT 06712.
