Fairfield Dem Launches Campaign for State House

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Representative Town Meeting member Heather Dean announced this week she will seek one of Fairfield’s three seats in the state House of Representatives. The Democrat will run to represent the 134th district, which covers the northern portions of Fairfield and parts of Trumbull.

"I am proud of my reputation as a committed, bipartisan public servant who rolls up her sleeves to get the job done," Dean told supporters at her campaign announcement Saturday. "I will bring my collaborative style of leadership to Hartford to find real solutions to our problems and deliver real results for the people of Fairfield and Trumbull."

Dean currently represents District 4 in the Representative Town Meeting, Fairfield’s legislature. She was elected to her fourth non-consecutive term to the body this past November. She currently is the only Democrat from the district on the board.

Dean also was a past president of Osborn Hill Elementary School’s PTA. Professionally, she and her husband, Jeff, own a small business in Fairfield.

Republican Tony Hwang currently represents the 134th district. Hwang won his second term to the state House of Representatives in 2010 with more than 70 percent of the vote against Democratic challenger Michael Murren.

The district has changed since the 2010, however. Last fall, the state’s redistricting committee rearranged Fairfield’s representation in the statehouse. The 134th was left unchanged in Trumbull, but expanded in Fairfield. The district now includes all of Fairfield north of the Samp Mortar Reservoir on the eastern side of town and everything north of Hill Farm Road to the west.

Dean announced her candidacy at the Pious Bird of Good Omen boutique in the Brick Walk Shopping Center last Saturday morning. She was joined by other town Democratic leaders, including First Selectman Michael Tetreau and State Rep. Kim Fawcett, who currently is Fairfield’s only Democratic representative in the statehouse.

"Heather is a dynamic leader who is connected to our community and our schools,” Fawcett said. “She genuinely cares."
