Fairfield Doctor Charged With Illegally Prescribing Oxycodone

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A Fairfield doctor who practices medicine in Stamford was arrested on charges of illegally prescribing oxycodone and other controlled substances to patients, the U.S. attorney for Connecticut said in a statement.

Dr. John Katsetos, 52, was arrested Tuesday on a charge that he exceeded the scope of his medical license to dispense controlled substances. He appeared Wednesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Holly B. Fitzsimmons in Bridgeport and was released on $1 million bond.

The criminal complaint said Katsetos has practiced medicine for more than 20 years, most recently out of offices at 90 Morgan St. in Stamford and 353 Bridgeport Ave. in Milford. He operated as a general practitioner and was not a licensed as a pain specialist.

A long-term U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration investigation, which included the use of undercover law enforcement personnel, found that Katsetos was writing prescriptions for large quantities of Schedules II, III, IV and V controlled substances outside the scope of legitimate medical practice.

The complaint further says that a vast majority of these prescriptions were for medications that contain oxycodone, and that Katsetos prescribed oxycodone despite awareness that his patients were addicted, had been arrested for possessing and distributing controlled substances, or were not using oxycodone themselves.

Katsetos was charged with conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute controlled substances, which carries a maximum prison term of 20 years and a fine of up to $1 million.
