A Fairfield firefighter was sent to the hospital after working to put out a roaring fire on the top floor of a condominium complex on Brentwood Avenue on Tuesday morning. None of the condos residents were hurt in the blaze, but the building is uninhabitable for now.
At 9:46 a.m. Tuesday, the Fairfield Fire Department received calls from neighbors of flames and smoke pouring out of the back of the house at 157 Brentwood Ave. Six trucks and one car were sent to the scene. Arriving first were firefighters Tim Firla, Brian Kibbe and Ed Riggs, who entered the four-unit condominium. No one was on the first or second floors, but the trio saw flames on the third floor moving down the interior stairs.
Provisionary Lt. Bill Tuttle and Provisionary Firefighter Tim Kennelly were next on the scene, and they worked to put out the flames while Firla, Kibbe and Riggs continued to search for residents. No one was inside the building at the time.
It was a great stop, an aggressive fire attack by our newest company officer and firefighter, said Fire Chief Richard Felner. We hate to see anyone unable to return to their home, but this could have been so much worse if they hadnt stopped the fire where they found it on arrival.
The area was cleared at about 11 a.m. No residents or pets were harmed in the blaze. However, one firefighter was taken to Bridgeport Hospital for treatment of dehydration. Fire Marshal William Kessler said the blaze was under investigation, but it appears it started in a third floor room used as an office.
