The day’s ecologically-minded events start with Fairfield’s Earth Day Celebration at Fairfield Warde High School. The annual event features exhibits and demonstrations from local organizations and companies focusing on a common environmental theme. This year’s theme is “The Face of Climate Change.”

“We are looking forward to this important celebration that highlights the people and projects that are making an environmental difference in Fairfield,” Fairfield Earth Day Celebration Chair Larry Kaley said in a press release. “We encourage the entire town to participate.”

Congressman Jim Himes and Fairfield’s state legislators will also hold a community forum to talk about environmental issues. And the first-ever Westport Electric Car Club EV Road Rally will make a pit stop in Fairfield for a special demonstration at noon.

The Earth Day celebration will also feature two stages with performances from local bands and Fairfield Public Schools students. A full schedule of special events is available at the Fairfield Earth Day Celebration website.

Across town, Fairfield Tree Warden Ken Placko will celebrate Fairfield’s 26th official Arbor Day by planting a tree on Old Town Hall Green. The Norway spruce used in the ceremony was donated by the Eunice Burr Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to help commemorate the national holiday in honor of America’s trees.

Connecticut chief forester Chris Donnelly will also present Fairfield with its 25th “Tree City USA” designation. The honor goes to towns that make a significant contribution to planting and maintaining trees each year. Fairfield was the first town in Connecticut to receive the designation.

“Fairfield is very proud to continue to be recognized as a Tree City USA,” First Selectman Michael Tetreau said in a press release. “This honor is a testament to the tremendous efforts by our residents, volunteer committees and our tree warden.”

Fairfield’s Earth Day Celebration takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fairfield Warde High School, 755 Melville Ave. The Arbor Day planting is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Old Town Hall Green, 675 Old Post Road.
