Fairfielders will have to learn a new name for a town landmark in a few weeks: The Carl Dickman Par-3 Golf Course. The towns Board of Selectmen decided Wednesday to rename the South Pine Creek course after Dickman, a former selectman and state representative who died earlier this year. All three board members agreed it was a fitting tribute to the avid golf fan and dedicated public servant.
He was very passionate about golf, Selectman James Walsh said. But not only that, for me, its more about Carls passion for the town of Fairfield. Carl was very well-liked by everyone he met, and he was always willing to do volunteer work to help any resident of this town in anything that they needed.
Dickman worked in state and local politics for 37 years, starting with his election to the Plan and Zoning Commission in 1967. He served on the Board of Selectmen for 17 of those years, before winning the 132nd District seat in the state House of Representatives, where her served until his retirement in 2004.
Outside of politics, he loved the sport of golf, serving as the H. Smith Richardson Gold Club president and president of the New England Public Golf Association. Because of this, the three selectmen agreed that the former South Pine Creek Course should bear Dickmans name. The course will officially be dedicated in a ceremony later this spring.
