One way residents can be part of National Preparedness Month is to train to become a volunteer member of Fairfield’s Community Emergency Response Team, he said. In the event of an emergency or disaster, team members are trained to have the knowledge and skills to help families, friends and neighbors.

Since 2007, the volunteer organization has operated under the direction of the Town of Fairfield's emergency management director.

The team holds drills, such as the recent one Aug. 23, where members inventoried supplies needed by the town in the event an emergency shelter is required.

In past events, the team has provided leadership and staff for the Fairfield shelter at Ludlowe High School.

“National Preparedness Month is a good time to remind ourselves to be prepared for incidences like potential storms," Tetreau said in a press release. "Fairfield is fortunate to have the finest emergency services personnel and town departments that go above and beyond the call of duty time and time again to protect our community. Thanks to the many dedicated members of CERT, including those who served us in the past and those who currently serve, Fairfield receives additional assistance in times of need.”
