Tetreau presented a proclamation Monday to Commander John Pyrch and treasurer Donald Peterson, thanking them for the group's long history in educating boaters in the area. During his proclamation, Tetreau said May 17 to 23 would be recognized as National Safe Boating Week in the town of Fairfield.
The Penfield Sail & Power Squadron started in 1969, when the Housatonic chapter of the Squadron grew too large. In 2011, the Housatonic chapter combined with the Penfield chapter to serve the greater Fairfield and Bridgeport area. The actual group started in 1911 out of Boston and became national in 1914.
Much of what the group does is promote public awareness about boating safety, "The key to that is a good education," Pyrch said.
The group acts in three ways, Pyrch said: teaching and helping residents get their boating licenses; providing seminars to the public; and holding seminars for the members of the group.
"We run an Americas Boating Course," Peterson said. The eight-hour course provides a certificate that can help them in getting a boating license.
The Penfield Sail & Power Squadron also holds regular flair courses at the Fairfield Fire Training site. The next one will be held Saturday, May 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
