According to the New Haven Register, U.S. Magistrate Judge Sarah Merriam said that because of Kljusev's dual citizenship with Canada, she has determined him to be a significant flight risk if released.

Kljusev, who has operated a psychiatry practice in Milford, was arrested Nov. 12, at his home in Fairfield and charged with distributing narcotics outside of the scope of professional practice, and money laundering.

According to the criminal complaint, Kljusev has been a high-volume prescriber of Adderall and Xanax to patients who pay for office visits and prescriptions in cash.

The Register reported that during the proceedings on Tuesday, it was announced that Kljusev makes monthly trips to Macedonia to visit his mother and sister, and found that his wife and three children also have Macedonian citizenship.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Avi Perry said during proceedings Tuesday that Kljusev has significant assets in Macedonia, in particular a bank account holding about $873,000 which Kjlusev argued that the amount was closer to $10,000, the Register reported.
