Richard White Way is named after former Public Works Director Richard White, who retired last summer after 27 years in the department. The street was chosen because it leads to White’s former headquarters at the DPW garage, and to the town’s recycling center, school bus depot and animal shelter.
First Selectman Michael Tetreau said the idea to honor White by naming a street after him came from one of his employees at the DPW. The Board of Selectmen voted to change the street name at its meeting Wednesday.
“Everything this man has done has been in the best interests of the town of Fairfield,” Selectman Kevin Kiley said before the vote. “He has done a phenomenal job for this town.”
What is now Ash Creek Boulevard was previously the street with no name. The road was built to provide access to the new commuter lots at the Fairfield Metro train station and to future developments nearby. It runs from Black Rock Turnpike to Kings Highway over the station.
The Board of Selectmen had previously considered naming the street Daly Drive in honor of Medal of Honor winner Michael Daly, but Tetreau said Wednesday that plan was dropped because of his family’s wishes. Instead, Tetreau suggested the more regional name Ash Creek Boulevard, which he and his fellow selectmen approved unanimously Wednesday.
“I think it’s aptly named, and it works well,” said Selectman Cristin McCarthy Vahey.
