"Traffic-wise, commuters should try all they can to avoid Post Road," Lt. James Perez said Thursday.

Perez predicts there will be more traffic than usual on the busy, stoplight-heavy thoroughfare due to the trick-or-treating event.

Fairfield will have extra traffic officers on duty to assure children stay safe at the townwide event, but will need the help of parents to make sure the evening goes off without incident, he said.

Trick-or-Treat on Safety Street, which is free, will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. The Kiwanis of Fairfield revived the popular event this year. It was canceled or postponed in each of the last three years.

“It’s a great opportunity for parents to get out with their kids in the daylight and go trick-or-treating, and enjoy the event,” said Glenn Barnhard, presidential adviser of the Kiwanis club.

Traditionally, “Trick-or-Treat on Safety Street” provides families the opportunity to celebrate Halloween in downtown Fairfield. Each merchant participating in the event will have an orange sign on their storefront advertising their participation. Children can trick-or-treat at these establishments.

Perez said parents should remember a few Halloween tips to help keep their kids safe in any place they go trick-or-treating:

  • Make sure children wear Halloween costumes that are bright or reflective so they can be see by drivers.
  • Costumes shouldn't be so long that they present a tripping hazard.
  • Even with Post Road being a well-lit area, children and parents should carry a light source with them. According to Perez, glow sticks are effective and can last for up to three hours.
  • Parents should speak to children about 911 procedure in case of an emergency, or in the case of becoming separated during the evening.
  • Have a plan of the neighborhoods you plan to visit, where you will meet your children and what time you will meet them.
  • Avoid dark streets or strange houses.
  • If you are planning on having trick-or-treaters come to your home, make sure your yard and doorstep are well lit, and your yard is free of obstructions children or parents may trip on.

Fairfield police are reminding parents of the dangerous twilight hour, when it becomes most difficult for drivers to see bystanders in the road.

"It's a perfect time to take a break and count your candy before going back out," Perez said.

Parents should also remember they are needed even after the night is over.

"Parents have the responsibility to check candy before their kids eat it," Perez said.
