The problem stems from leaks in the roof, which was replaced earlier this year, officials said. After the new roof was put in, the staff raised concerns regarding the indoor air quality, particularly in the lower basement level near the town’s off-site servers.

After the roofing project was finished, the town hired ServPro of Bridgeport to remove materials identified in the unfinished non-public mechanical and furnace room.

During the removal, a significant mold growth was discovered under the sheetrock walls and in other structural elements, town officials said.

This changed the amount of work needed to clear the area. The town hired AAIS, an environmental remediation company, to perform the abatement.

“The Public Works Department is taking the proper steps to resolve this issue quickly and in a way that best protects the library staff and members of the public,” Fairfield Health Director Sands Cleary said. "Throughout the project, the town has been following the guidance of the experts from the firm conducting the initial testing and designing the remediation plan.

“This firm will monitor the work of the company performing the remediation to ensure all work is done properly and will also be collecting the clearance samples to ensure the building is safe to reoccupy.”

According to the town, there should be no health risks to any of the patrons to the library or the staff because the mold was only discovered after the sheetrock wall was opened.

There should be no extra cost to the town for the work. The current Department of Public Words operating budget will cover the costs of the remediation.

To track the progress of the remediation work, the Fairfield Public Library will be posting updates on its website.
