FBI Probe Uncovers Child Porn

Child pornography charges against the former assistant athletic director for communications at Sacred Heart University stemmed from an undercover FBI probe that started in California, according to a published report.

Eugene "Gene" Gumbs, 49, of Middletown, appeared in Middletown Superior Court Monday on charges of importing child pornography and second-degree illegal possession of child porn. He did not enter a plea, according to the Hartford Courant. Gumbs had posted $35,000 bail after his April 30 arrest; his next court date is June 9.

According to the warrant for his arrest, FBI agents in San Francisco conducted an online investigation of hello.com in 2008, the Courant reported. The FBI identified a man who had traded child pornography on the site with a University of Dayton student in Ohio, the warrant states.

Gumbs' username was found on the student's computer. An examination of Gumbs' personal computer showed more than 20 images of child pornography, it states. No images were found on the computer owned by Sacred Heart, the Courant reported.

Gumbs, who resigned from Sacred Heart's athletic department on May 7, did not attend his daughter’s graduation at the university on Sunday. Emily Gumbs earned a bachelor's degree in media studies.
