FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield will improve handicap accessibility at four of its coastal recreation centers later this year.

South Benson Marina, Southport Beach, Ye Old Yacht Yard and Sasco Beach will see improvements to their picnic areas, concession stands and restrooms to make them compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The work will include new wheelchair ramps and more accessible bathrooms, among other changes.

Fairfield has done similar work at Jennings Beach, Penfield Beach and Lake Mohegan in recent years.

The project’s funding comes from a $275,000 grant from the state’s Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP). The grants go to towns across the state each year to help shore up infrastructure and improve public spaces.

"Storm Sandy caused severe damage to some of Fairfield's most popular public pavilions, but our recovery is well under way,” said State Senator John McKinney (R-Fairfield) in a news release. “Our delegation will continue to work for the funding Fairfield needs to complete its restorations.”
