Henry J. Leffert, 86, died Sunday night at Bridgeport Hospital after a long illness. Leffert was the town of Fairfields recreation director for many years.
Leffert was born in Fairfield on Jan. 22, 1925, and lived in town his entire life. He graduated from Arnold College with a degree in physical education, recreation and health, and worked as a physical education teacher at Stratfield Elementary School for several years.
For the rest of his career, Leffert served as Fairfield recreation director. He oversaw the development of development of Lake Mohegan, the South Pine Creek athletic complex, the Smith Richardson Golf Course and the tennis bubble. He was most proud of his work building what are now Penfield Pavilion and the Jacky Durrell Pavilion on Fairfield Beach.
After his retirement in 1987, he taught round dancing with his wife, Virginia, for many years. The couple also loved to travel around the Northeast. He was also a longtime member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church, serving on the Vestry for many years.
Leffert is survived by Virginia, his wife of 61 years; his son, Timothy Leffert and wife Ann of Southport; brother Art Leffert of Mystic; sister Patricia Watson of Fairfield; and two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, James Leffert.
Calling hours are Wednesday, Feb. 9, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 S. Benson Road, Fairfield. A memorial service will be celebrated at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 661 Old Post Road, Thursday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m.
