Summer has more thunderstorms that occur during a season where more people are outside, leading to a higher number strikes – an average of 15 lightning deaths occurred in July from 2006 to 2014.

To date, there have been 17 lightning deaths in the U.S., according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
