A New Haven man was arrested Monday for allegedly cashing a forged check stolen from a Fairfield home. Rodger Torpey, 55, cashed a check for $385 written out in his name at a New Haven bank in December. Torpey told police that he received the check from a friend, who told him it was for yard work he had completed.
In December, a Hunter Road resident reported to Fairfield police that a checkbook had been stolen from a drawer in her bedroom. She noticed the book was missing after seeing the amount paid out to Torpey earlier that week. During the investigation, the Fairfield womans cat sitter told detectives that she allowed a former friend into the home to use the bathroom, and he entered one of the bedrooms.
Torpey told police the same man gave him a blank check a few days later, explaining that he received it from someone he does yard work for. Torpey said he filled out the check in his name, cashed it at a New Haven bank and handed the money over to the other man.
Fairfield police arrested Torpey on Tuesday on a warrant on charges of sixth-degree larceny and second-degree forgery. He was released on a promise to appear in court May 17. Police have not found the other man allegedly involved.

Three Fairfield teens were arrested on shoplifting charges Monday evening at Bobs clothing store on the Post Road. Store security reported seeing two girls enter a dressing room with merchandise and walk out with fewer items than before after the third left to bring in more clothes. When an employee stopped them at the exit, two of the girls were found with hidden items, valued at about $45 and $40.
Fairfield police charged a 14-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl with sixth-degree larceny. They also charged a second 14-year-old with conspiracy to commit larceny for allegedly helping her friends. All three were released into their parents custody and are due in court May 23.
