Ninth-grade math whiz Shubham Singh scored first place in the nation among freshmen at MathCON, a prestigious academic competition hosted by Concept Schools in Chicago. Anubhav Dhar, his 10th-grade classmate at Bridgeport's Fairchild Wheeler Interdistrict Magnet High School, came in 12th place nationally among all sophomore competitors.
Kevin Wallin, a 63-year-old suspended priest dubbed "Monsignor Meth" who served as pastor in Roman Catholic parishes in Bridgeport and Danbury, was sentenced to 65 months in federal prison sentence for trafficking methamphetamines.

Three former executives at the Ridgefield-based New Stream Capital hedge fund were sentenced to federal prison terms for their roles in a $46 million fraud scheme. Bart Gutekunst, 63, of Weston was sentenced to 30 months in prison; David Bryson, 46, of Ridgefield to 33 months; and Richard Pereira, 43, of Ridgefield to 33 months.
A 20-year-old man from Bridgeport and an 85-year-old man from Fairfield were killed in separate but related crashes in Fairfield early Tuesday morning. In the first accident, Demonte Anozine, was thrown from a car during a rollover on I-95 and died on impact. Two others were pulled alive from the wreckage with serious injuries.
The second accident happened on Black Rock Turnpike near Burroughs Road when a car driven by Albert J. Kavalecz collided with a tractor-trailer. Traffic was diverted from I-95 onto the local streets as the earlier fatal crash was cleaned up and investigated. Kavalecz died at the hospital of his injuries.
A truck delivering mulch to Gregory's Sawmill in Wilton caused daylong havoc on Route 7 after hitting a power line Wednesday morning and catching fire. The busy road was closed for most of the day, even during school dismissal.
The Westport Representative Town Meeting approved the 2015-16 Board of Education budget proposal as submitted at $111.2 million, a 1.8 percent increase. The RTM unanimously approved a $78.9 million municipal budget for 2015-16, a 2.51 increase. Westport’s total budget for the next fiscal year is $202.5 million.
