Metro-North, Amtrak Train Service Disrupted; NTSB Heads To Accident Scene

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Metro-North train service was suspended between South Norwalk and New Haven, and Amtrak was halted indefinitely between New York and Boston after the train crash Friday evening on the Fairfield-Bridgeport border.

The National Transportation Safety Board tweeted that it was sending "a team of investigators to CT to investigate today's Metro-North train derailment. Details on team to come."

All service was suspended between South Norwalk and New Haven, Metro-North said. Westbound service will originate out of South Norwalk, making all stops to Grand Central Terminal. Eastbound service will make all stops to South Norwalk but go no farther due to the derailment.

Amtrak Northeast ‏sent a Tweet that said: All service New York (NYP) to Boston (BOS) suspended indefinitely by track obstruction.

The train involved was the 4:41 p.m. train out of Grand Central due in New Haven at 6:32 p.m., Metro-North said. In derailing, it hit a westbound train on the adjacent track, she said. That train was the 5:35 p.m. out of New Haven due in Grand Central at 7:18 p.m.

The accident occurred near and under I-95. With the police activity, the exit ramps at Exit 25 on I-95 northbound and southbound were closed, the state Department of Transportation reported.

Commuters needed train service were advised to head to South Norwalk or any other station closer to New York where trains were running. All trains were stopped from East Norwalk to New Haven.
