Pequot Library Helps Residents Focus On Health, Wellness With Free Series

SOUTHPORT, Conn. –The Pequot Library is offering a series of six free programs from A to Z running from August through October that will focus on health and wellness.

The series kicks off with a Zumba class Thursday, Aug. 13 from 6:30-7:45 p.m. Pequot Library and Interim HealthCare team up to offer basic Zumba classes with professional instructor and certified nutritionist Nora Patumanon. This is a Latin-inspired, easy to follow, calorie-burning fitness program that helps make fitness fun. The class is open to all levels. Registration is required and the class is free and open to the public. Two additional classes will be offered Friday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. and Monday, Oct. 26 at 6:30 p.m.

Other classes in this health and wellness series include:

Ask the nurse and free blood pressure screenings Tuesday, Aug. 18 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Madeline Tirado, RN, from Interim Healthcare, will provide free blood pressure screenings. Immediately following, there will be a 30-minute opportunity for the public to ask questions. Ask Tirado health questions in her areas of experience: diabetes, heart failure, edema management, wound care, disease prevention and healthier lifestyles. 

Wednesday, Aug. 19 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m, the public is invited to chat with social worker Arthur Gottlieb, LCSW, CSA, during a program called, “The Sandwich Generation.” Explore the emotional and financial challenges for those "sandwiched" between their caregiving responsibilities of caring for young children and aging parents. It may also include providing care for grandparents, parents, children, adult children and grandchildren. Discuss how to balance the needs of others with one's own personal life. 

Chat with a dietician Tuesday, Aug. 25 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This information session is led by a certified nutritionist Patumanon to help older adults gain a better understanding of nutrition and healthier food choices. It will include nutrients to know, healthy eating plans, food safety and shopping tips.

No registration is required for this series, and it is free and open to the public.
