Problems began last Thursday, March 19, when a sewer main collapsed on Post Road East, causing heavy traffic delays.

But a different portion of the sewer being repaired by Westport’s Engineering Department collapsed while crews worked on a portion of the line, police said.

Crews have been working throughout Thursday, Friday and over the weekend to fix the initial break, only to have a separate section collapse in the same area by Sunday evening, according to a Westport Police press release.

Although the new sewer collapse is smaller in size, crews are expected to be working throughout Monday and into the evening commuting hours, police said.

During construction, one lane on each side of Post Road East will be shut down, causing a traffic funnel. Police warn of massive delays that are expected during rush hour.

Police are advising residents plan accordingly and take an alternate route.
