Primary Set in Fairfield State House Race

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Voters will now pick the Democratic nominee for one of Fairfield’s three state House of Representatives seats. Kevin Coyner filed for a primary earlier this week for the party’s nomination, challenging party-endorsed candidate Sue Brand in the 132nd District.

Brand, a member of Fairfield’s Board of Education, won the Democratic Town Committee’s nomination at the district convention May 23. She edged out Coyner, a firefighter who works in Greenwich, by one vote. The two will now face off in a primary Aug. 14.

“Since there was only a one vote margin in the nomination, I felt it was important to take the decision to the voters in Fairfield in the August Democratic primary election,” Coyner said in a statement.

The 132nd District covers most of Fairfield’s coastline and southern neighborhoods. It is currently represented by Republican Brenda Kupchick. The district’s Republicans voted unanimously for Kupchick to be the party’s nominee in her bid for a second term.
