The money provided to Operation Hope will help the committee provide Fairfield residents with small grants. These funds will cover expenses such as home repairs and mitigation, furniture and appliance replacement, trimming and removal of trees, and other costs linked to the elevation of homes.
“We applied for these additional funds to help the town reach more people affected by the storm,” said Operation Hope Executive Director Carla Miklos. “We hope that those who read this will let their friends and neighbors know that the funds exist to help them with their unmet needs.”
In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, Operation Hope and residents of Fairfield created the Fairfield Storm Sandy Relief Fund. To date, the fund has raised and spent more than $250,000 worth of donations. It has financed relief costs not covered by insurance or other government programs. These services include basement cleanup and mold remediation; as well as replacement of clothing, springs and mattresses.
The Fairfield Storm Sandy Relief Fund is still accepting applications from Fairfield residents affected by the storm. These applications are reviewed by a committee of citizens and representatives from Fairfield.
The Red Cross has received $309 million in donations to fund Sandy recovery efforts, which account for the organization’s largest U.S. operation in more than five years.
In addition to Operation Hope, the Red Cross has partnered with other Connecticut-focused organizations, including CT Rises, United Way Coastal Fairfield County and the North Walke Housing Corp.
“On behalf of our neighbors who continue to struggle to recover from Storm Sandy, we are deeply grateful to the Red Cross for its generous support,” said First Selectman Mike Tetreau
