Ross Named Fairfield's Acting Assessor

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield is ready for a changing of the guard at one of its most important positions. Deputy Town Assessor Donald Ross will take over his boss’s role full-time, at least for the next six months. The Board of Selectmen unanimously approved Ross to take over the post after Town Assessor Thomas Browne steps down at the end of the month.

“I grew up in this town,” Ross said after the appointment was made official. “This is an opportunity for me to give to the town that has given me so much.”

The town assessor is responsible for maintaining Fairfield’s grand list, the database of all the town’s properties and their values. Those values are what the town uses to determine its property tax bills each summer. Ross most likely won’t oversee a full-town revaluation such as the one that happened in 2010. But he will be responsible for fielding individual appeals and making the new grand list in January.

Browne will retire at the end of September after 37 years on the job. Ross has worked in the office since 1975, and will run the department for the next six months, or until a full-time replacement is appointed.
