The Coast Guard and other agency crews were searching for a possible person in the waters. Gregory Blanco, 41, from Northport, N.Y., is missing, the Coast Guard said.

A good Samaritan reported an unmanned red 14-foot one-person kayak north of Stratford Shoal Middle Ground in the Sound at about 8:30 a.m. Monday, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound said.

The Coast Guard issued an urgent marine information broadcast on VHF-channel-16 and launched a boatcrew from Coast Guard Station New Haven and Eatons Neck.

They located the kayak with personal items onboard. Markings on the kayak suggested the owner departed from the Northport area, the Coast Guard said.

Suffolk County Police Department officials located Blanco's vehicle at the Soundview Boat Ramp Marina in Northport.

Anyone with information about the owner of the kayak and his possible location is asked to contact Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound Command Center at 203-468-4421.
