Selectmen Want Station To Remain 'Fairfield Metro'

Fairfield’s third train station will be named “Fairfield Metro” if the Board of Selectmen has its way. The board voted unanimously to recommend the station’s original name to the state Department of Transportation. The other option put before it by First Selectman Kenneth Flatto was “Grasmere Metro.”

When the federal, state and local governments signed a three-party agreement to build the station in 2001, “Fairfield Metro” was the name used in all the legal documents. And local developer Black Rock Realty plans to name the retail and office complex adjacent to the station the “Fairfield Metro Center” to tie in with that name.

“If [the name] is going to help them market the property, and rent the property, and get the taxes generated from the property faster, then I think we should go with [Fairfield Metro],” Selectman Sherri Steeneck said.

But late last year, Flatto and the DOT decided to look into other names for the station. An online survey showed one overwhelming favorite — “Black Rock,” since the station sits on Black Rock Turnpike and abuts the Black Rock section of Bridgeport. But Flatto said Wednesday that name was shot down at a meeting he had with members of the local Chamber of Commerce and state representatives.

“I did not think it should have a Bridgeport name in it, since Bridgeport did not participate,” said Selectman James Walsh. “It was the taxpayers of Fairfield who were members of the tri-party agreement.”

The second option was “Grasmere Metro,” which received only 3.4 percent of the first-choice votes in the online survey. The three board members opted to stay with the name they’ve been using for 10 years. The Department of Transportation has the final say. But signs at the construction site now read “Fairfield Metro.”
