The death of Jonathan Sabo, a sophomore at Shelton High, was announced Friday by School Superintendent Chris Clouet.
"With deep sorrow I must communicate to the community that a well-liked student at SHS, Jonathan Sabo, passed away last night," Clouet said in the statement. "His untimely death is a family tragedy first and foremost, and it is a shock to his friends and the entire school community — as well as all of Shelton.
"We need to support the Sabo family and all of our students at this most difficult time."
Shelton High School also posted tips online to help students cope with crisis.
In the wake of his death, Shelton High postponed all its athletic events. The Friday night football game against Xavier High School was postponed until Saturday, according to Twitter posts from the school system.
Sabo was a snare drummer in the Shelton High Gaels Marching Band, according to the Connecticut Post.
Police told the Herald that officers searched the wooded area near Booth Hill Road after a report of a missing juvenile. A cause of death was not released, but police were investigating.
The teen's father told the Connecticut Post that the boy's death was "unexpected."
Shelton American Little League expressed its sympathies.
"It is with a very heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of another Shelton American family member. Jonathan Sabo, the big brother of Jack Sabo passed away at the tender age of 15," the group said in a Facebook post. "Our Love and Blessings are with the Sabo family during this very difficult time."
