Snow is expected before midnight Sunday, with more snow, sleet and freezing rain overnight throughout the region, the weather service said.
Total nighttime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is possible with a coating of a tenth of an inch of ice, according to the National Weather Service. Up to 3 inches of snow could fall in northern areas and hills. The overnight low will be about 28 degrees.
Rain or freezing rain will fall Monday morning, becoming all rain after noon.
Visibility on road could be a half-mile or less, especially with moderate or heavy snow. Icy conditions will cause hazardous travel into Monday morning, especially on untreated roads. Drivers should exercise caution.
Original story: NORTHERN FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Northern Fairfield County from 6 p.m. Sunday until 8 a.m. Monday, with snow expected to arrive Sunday night before changing to sleet and freezing rain, according to the National Weather Service.
Snow is expected to develop Sunday afternoon in Connecticut, spreading southwest to northeast, the weather service said. The flurries may initially be light but could reduce visibility down to a mile. Periods of moderate and heavy snow are possible, the weather service said.
Snow accumulations of up to 2 inches along with a tenth of an inch of ice could occur overnight as sleet begins to fall in the mix, the weather service said.
Winds will be out of the east at 5 to 10 mph with gusts of about 20 mph.
Drivers are warned to watch out for slippery conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses, and to proceed slowly and cautiously.
Temperatures are expected to rise above the freezing mark by Monday morning, but icy conditions will result in hazardous morning rush-hour travel before that occurs.
The advisory also includes all of Connecticut except the coastline as well as Northern Westchester County and Putnam, Rockland and Oranges counties in New York.
Monday's high temperature is expected to be 45 degrees with periods of rain, mainly occurring before 2 p.m.
There is a 30 percent chance of snow Tuesday, with a high of 36.
Wednesday is expected to be sunny with temperatures in the low 30s.
