North has served as the group's director of Fairfield operations since 2007. North will oversee a staff of approximately 30, based in Fairfield, Milford, Glastonbury, Essex and Pomfret, and will continue the organization’s efforts to establish a center in the Old Lyme-Essex area.
“I can assure all our members and everyone who is concerned about conservation in Connecticut that the Connecticut Audubon Society will continue to be a leader and will build on our successes," North said. "Our members and supporters have made it clear that that’s what they expect, and we’re confident we will do so.”
The Connecticut Audubon Society’s mission is to conserve the state’s birds and their habitats. It manages 19 sanctuaries covering 2,600 acres, conducts an award-winning outdoor science education program (Science in Nature) for students across the state, and operates four summer day camps. Its staff includes science educators, birders and conservationists.
“Nelson provides us with solid and steady leadership at a time when we are working hard to protect and improve Connecticut’s remaining natural areas,” said Peter Kunkel, chairman of the group's board of directors. “We think the time is right to do more, with more members, and Nelson will lead us there.”
North succeeds Alexander Brash, who resigned in February.
