Sun Will Give Way To Rain, Melting Wednesday In Fairfield

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The sunny skies across Fairfield County on Wednesday morning will give way to clouds and rain by the afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

The showers will arrive by about 1 p.m. as temperatures warm to about 40 degrees. Some freezing rain is possible as well depending on temperatures, especially in northern Fairfield County.

Temperatures will drop into the 20s by evening, which could cause icy and slippery conditions, the weather service said.

Significant melting is expected during the daylight hours from Wednesday through Saturday with temperatures above freezing and additional rainfall expected on Wednesday and again Thursday night into Friday.

Initially, melting snow and ice will fall from bridges and roofs, creating a travel hazard close to structures.

As the warming persists, the potential for ice jam flooding from streams and rivers will increase near obstructions, bends and narrow spots in rivers Thursday through Saturday.

Snow-covered structures, such as garages or flat-roofed buildings, as well as trees could collapse under the weight of the wet snow and ice in these conditions, the weather service warned.
