And the winner is: Black Rock! Respondents to Fairfield's train station survey overwhelmingly chose the neighborhood's name for the third Metro-North Railroad stop in town.
More than 1,200 people filled out the town's survey. According to results released this week, 62 percent of responders chose either Black Rock or Fairfield-Black Rock as their top choice. About 69 percent chose Black Rock as either their first or second choice.
The most popular runner-up was Ash Creek, which got about 15 percent of the votes for first choice between its two options, either with or without the town name, and was either a first or second choice for about 54 percent of voters.
The survey results, however, do not mean the station will be called Black Rock. The Connecticut Department of Transportation has final say in the matter and already printed a few signs with the original name, Fairfield Metro. (Only 18 percent of voters named Fairfield Metro as their first or second choice.)
Fairfield First Selectman Kenneth Flatto said when he announced the survey that the DOT said it might change its mind if the survey showed a clear consensus. The DOT will announce its final decision by February.
