GREENWICH, Conn. – A tree fell on the Merritt Parkway in Greenwich just after 3 p.m. Wednesday, causing traffic to back up for more than two miles.
The tree fell on the southbound side of the parkway just past Exit 31, said Kevin Nursick, a spokesman for the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
No vehicles were hit and no one was injured, but the parkway was closed for a short time, Nursick said. Traffic has been now reduced to one lane while state crews clear the tree from the road. Nursick said traffic is backed up for about 2 ½ miles.
The tree fall comes as ConnDOT crews are removing dead or dangerous trees from the Merritt near New Canaan and Westport. Work in the Greenwich area of the parkway is expected to begin in January.
“Anytime a tree falls on the roadway, that’s bad news,” Nursick said. “If that’s 5 p.m., that (tree) probably hits someone’s car.”
