UI: Be Ready For 'Several Days' Of Power Outages

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — The United Illuminating Company is warning its customers about the possibility of extended power outages if Hurricane Irene hits Fairfield County this Sunday.

The company suggests keeping “several days worth” of supplies, including non-perishable food, bottled water, first aid kits and battery-operated lights and radios in case power goes out due to heavy rains and high winds from the storm.

“Storm preparation is under way, and UI stands ready to dispatch crews and equipment as conditions dictate,” the company said in a press release Thursday.

If power lines go down, United Illuminating says its first priorities will be de-energizing and cutting damaged lines and maintaining power to emergency facilities such as hospitals, evacuation centers and public safety offices. Then they would move on to “maximum number of customers in a minimum amount of time using available work forces.”

If you lose power, you should call the company at 1-800-7-CALL-UI (1-800-722-5584), or 203-499-3333 in the New Haven area. If you spot a downed power line or damaged equipment, United Illuminating suggests first calling 911, then telling them about the problem at the numbers above.

You can find more tips and information at United Illuminating’s “Storm Center.”
