On Dec. 19, William Dong was sentenced by state Superior Court Judge Frank Iannotti to eight years in prison suspended after two years due to a plea-bargain agreement, according to the report. He will then be placed on probation for five years, according to the report.

Dong was a UNH student when he carried two firearms to the campus on Dec. 3, 2013. When a woman saw Dong leave his vehicle with the weapons, she called police. An investigation found a Bushmaster XM-15 on the floor of Dong’s Toyota Rav4 parked on West Haven's Campbell Avenue. This weapon, banned under Connecticut law, was the same kind used by Adam Lanza to kill 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012.

Police searched Dong’s home in Fairfield and found a collection of news clippings about mass shootings, including articles about the deadly 2012 movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo.

In October, Dong pleaded guilty to charges that he took loaded guns onto the UNH campus and illegally transferred an assault weapon into the state.
