At 1:15 p.m., NWS Doppler Radar indicated numerous heavy showers and thunderstorms developing across the area and tracking to the Northeast.
Also, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Fairfield County, too, until 2:15 p.m. The warning is for Ridgefield, Danbury, Georgetown, Wilton and Redding as well as the larger surrounding area.
Radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing quarter size hail and damaging winds of more than 60 mph. The storm was located near Bedford, N.Y., and moving northeast.
Continuous cloud to ground lightning is possible. People are advised to move indoors immediately.
Doppler Radar indicates some weak rotation within the storm. The weather service said a tornado was not likely but could develop. If a tornado is spotted, act quickly and move to a safe spot, such as a basement or interior room.
Rainfall rates will exceed 1 inch per hour in the heaviest storms, it said.
Urban and small stream flooding can be expected across the area. Do not drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the roadway. Turn around and find another route.
Excessive runoff from the storm will cause flooding in urban area, including highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low-lying spots. Be prepared to take action if the flooding threat increases, the weather service warned.
Original story: FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. - Thunderstorms and extreme downpours are possible in Fairfield County from Thursday afternoon into early Friday, the National Weather Service says.
Residents can expect 1 to 2 inches of rain an hour, depending on the track of a severe weather pattern moving east through New York, the weather service said. Severe thunderstorms could include gusty winds and hail.
Depending on the track of the storm, flash flooding is possible, it said. The main cause of concern is flooding in poor drainage areas, including urban areas and streams.
The service says the threat of flooding and flash flooding will continue through Friday morning.
